Laura Alunni, Contemporary Artis: Biography and Artistic Journey
Laura Alunni is an Italian contemporary artist who lives and works in Perugia, Umbria. Her practice encompasses matter-based painting in the tradition of Italian Informale, mixed media and works approaching sculptural form. With a background in law and a professional artistic practice spanning four decades, she has developed a material-based language extended through a contemporary investigation of time, transformation and the relationship between control and the autonomy of matter.
She studied at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica,Venezia in 2002 and has developed her studio practice through painting, works on paper, mixed media and three-dimensional experimentation. Her research considers matter as an active agent of transformation: copper, quartz, gesso and pigments undergo processes of oxidation, layering and erosion that the artist observes and directs through precise interventions. The resulting works explore the shifting relationship between surface and depth, structure and fragmentation, image and object.
Between 2017 and 2021, Alunni exhibited in institutional and gallery contexts in Italy, San Marino, Spain and France. In 2018 she participated in the International Symposium of Medgidia, Romania, within the EU Culture Programme, and in 2020 she was selected as the winner of the international Vivere è cominciare competition organised by the Fondazione Cesare Pavese. Her works are held in the collections of the Museo Diocesano di Alba, the Copelouzos Family Art Museum in Athens, the Fondazione Opera Campana dei Caduti in Rovereto and the Istituto Barbarigo in Padua, as well as in private collections in Italy, Greece, Spain, France and Romania.
Following a period away from exhibition activity after 2021, Alunni returned to painting in 2025 with Entropy, a new body of work that brings together her longstanding investigation of matter with a renewed focus on transformation and controlled instability.
Entropy (2025–ongoing) is developed through oxidised copper and brass, gold leaf, ceramicised black quartz, gesso, pigments and copper wire on canvas. Through surfaces shaped by erosion, tension and controlled release, the works investigate collapse not as an endpoint but as a generative force: the vulnerability of matter becomes both method and form. The physical behaviour of the materials is incorporated into the making of each work, allowing oxidation, layering, fracture and intervention to coexist within a controlled yet evolving process.
The earlier series Echoes of an Inner Atlas (2016–2020) and Lighting Events (2019–2023) established the vocabulary that Entropy now distils: layered surfaces, spatial instability, the tension between image and object, and the threshold between structure and dissolution.
Her work and artistic research have been discussed by art historian Leo Strozzieri, whose critical text is included in the Entropy catalogue.
